I think It’s Fair To Say There Are 3 Major Players In the Power Yoga Stakes

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

The names are probably familiar to you

Power Yoga & Bryan Kest, Beryl Bender Birch and Baron Baptiste

Each one has a great concept but each one’s concept differs slightly from the other.

So I’ll pardon any confusion you may have about what the differences are. I was certainly confused when I started looking at what the differences were.

Some of the differences are extremely subtle … being more in the way of their philosophy rather than their practice, … but others are very obvious

How a Bowflex Tread Climber Works

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

You can effectively lose weight and improve your health with a Bowflex exercise machine. Bowflex is a company that offers a variety of exercise equipment. One of the best cardiovascular workouts you can get comes from the Bowflex Treadclimber.

Its name indicates its origins. Similar in some ways to a treadmill, the Bowflex Treadclimber allows you to walk as you normally would, except it adds a natural step-like motion to your movement. The Treadclimber combines both the treadmill and the stair stepper. You get the benefits that you would get from both machines from just the Bowflex.

How does a Bowflex Treadclimber work to help you lose weight and strengthen your muscles? A treadmill has a flat, single walking surface that may incline to increase the intensity of the workout. The Bowflex, on the other hand, has two platforms that raise and lower independent of one another. When you step down with one foot, the opposite foot goes up, and it feels much like climbing a gradual hill.

What is Cal Ripken Doing Today

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

On September 6, 1995, Cal Ripken broke the most storied record in baseball, Lou Gehrig’s streak of 2,130 consecutive games. Ripken played all of his games with the Baltimore Orioles, a rarity in an era when baseball players move from team to team seeking better deals. The 19-time All Star retired from the Baltimore Orioles in 2001 with 2,632 consecutive games played and over 3,000 hits. However, Ripken’s most enduring legacy and gift to the sport of baseball may come from the work he has done since his retirement.

One of the first things Ripken did upon retirement was to announce the creation of a facility dedicated to developing baseball at a grass-roots level. A Maryland native, Ripken chose Aberdeen, Maryland as the site of the facility which currently includes a state-of-the-art minor league ballpark and a youth baseball training academy. The Aberdeen facility features youth baseball fields designed to mimic famous major league ball parks like Oriole Park at Camden Yards and Wrigley Field. The Aberdeen facility hosts a “world series” each year that draws 15 teams of 11 and 12 year old players from all over the world.

Aggression and Violence in Sports

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

For anyone living in the American society, it does not take a sociologist or a political scientist to call attention to which extend sports has permeated the American way of life. Newspapers devote an entire section of their daily editions to the coverage of sports such as golf , football, soccer, and more. Newsprint about sport surpasses even that given to economy, politics, or any other single topic of interest. Television brings into contemporary households over 1,200 hours of live and taped sporting events every year, sometimes disrupting the usual family life and other times it provides a collective focus to a family’s attention.

Whether involved as spectators, participants, or sponsors, sport has been given an ideological foundation through the development of a belief system that outlines the supposed merits of sport. Sociologists support that sports open the door for the formation of amicable relationships between players, communities, racial groups, and even nations. Although sport has emerged as a relatively important element of people’s dominant value system and has received unquestionable support from the vast majority over the globe, sports violence has not been accepted as a necessary ingredient of athletic societies. Since it is popularly believed that sports build character and provide outlet for aggressive energy, scholars have studied the implications of sport violence and scientists have come up with a number of theories to explain how human aggression brings violence into the sphere of sports.

Just Play Beach Soccer

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

One friend of mine asked me recently why all men are crazy about playing football or what is known in United States as soccer. I am sick of explaining things that you can only understand based on personal experience. But although I managed to provide her with a luminous answer, she came back stating yet another question. “Is it different to play soccer on the grass than to play it on the beach?” That was a good one. “Of course it is different,” I replied. Beach soccer, as you can tell by its name, is a sport played on the beaches; preferably during spring or summer time. Although it has been played informally for decades, it was given its official name and rules only recently and specifically in 1992. Since then it managed to become a rather popular sport and I believe that if you really want to learn something about soccer you should better start playing it on the beach.

Outdoors Team Building

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

Team building means different things to different people, ranging from a fun experience to serious intentions of behavioral change. According to its official definition, team building refers to the process of establishing and developing a greater sense of collaboration and trust between team members. A variety of organizations, companies, schools and other institutions have decided to invest in team building by participating in interactive exercises, team assessment techniques and group discussions that enable people to cultivate this greater sense of teamwork.

Among the contexts of team building is that of sport clubs and work organizations. But what one should examine further is the need for team building. As modern trends show, societies and cultures have been dynamically interacting with each other and thus constructing a shared system of beliefs and values. Anticipating this development, different organizations and stakeholders have begun investing in their people by introducing them to the notion of team building and productive exchange. Greatly influenced by contemporary networks, this shift has resulted in a communications revolution and the creation of a truly global market system. Consequently, the new types of labor and the increased level of specialization required has caused individuals to be able and willing to relocate with much greater ease than in the past and to continue being productive in their new environment; whether that is a city or another country.

Throwing a Fantasy Football Draft Party

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

When a bunch of guys get together to talk football usually all you need to keep everyone happy is pizza and beer. But, since it actually involves work, a successful fantasy football draft party has a few more important parts.

Set up a large space with enough seating for everyone in your league. Comfortable seating like recliners or couches is a plus, but kitchen chairs will do in a pinch. If you’re planning to seat your members in a living room or den rather than at a table, provide clipboards to serve as writing surfaces. Be aware that some of your members may arrive with laptop computers so providing work surfaces like portable tables is a good idea. Of course you’ll also need adequate outlets nearby in case anyone needs to plug in.

Collect enough pencils for everyone in your league plus a few extras. Someone always shows up with nothing to write with. Small pads for taking notes can also be helpful. Print out enough draft sheets for each member, being sure to make a few extras.
