Physical Approach to Back Pain

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Most chronic back pain is the result of activities that have an adverse effect, such as lifting heavy objects improperly or simply sitting in a chair for long periods with bad posture. Changing our habits, therefore, can have a significant impact. Below are some of the most commonly advised physical measures to take. As always, see a physician or other qualified professional for assistance in deciding what is best for you.

Weight loss: approximately 67 percent of Americans are overweight. These extra pounds put pressure on the back and strain both back and abdominal muscles, which can weaken these muscles and compound the problem.

Improve Posture: Bad posture means your body is out of balance. When it comes to your back this means that only a small number of muscles and joints are doing most of the work. Proper posture will spread out the task and relieve the intense pressure on small areas of the back…

Jack Nicklaus

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Before Tiger Woods came along to re-define what golf dominance is all about, the man who used to stand head and shoulders over everybody else in the world of golf was Jack Nicklaus. They called him “The Golden Bear” and his shadow loomed large over professional golf, specifically on the PGA Toiur for over two decades, from the sixties to the late-eighties. After retiring from the Tour, he then lorded it over the Champions Tour for retired golf pros, from the late-eighties to the nineties. Woods may be closing the gap fast but, for now, the Golden Bear is still widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time.

Born in Ohio, Nicklaus attended public schools as a young child and had to overcome a mild case of polio. He started playing golf at the age of 10 and shot a score of 51 for his first nine holes, which is phenomenal for a first timer, whether adult of child. He won the Ohio Junior State title at age 12 and went on to win the same title five more times. He won the US Amateur title twice and an NCAA Championship once while he was still a student at Ohio State University.

History of Golf

Friday, October 27th, 2006

For generations, the favorite type of recreation in my family has been golf. I remember being a small child and trailing my great-grandfather, my grandfather and my own father around the golf course near my mother’s place of work. Come to think of it, my only memory of my great grandfather is that of him with a golf club in his hands. Actually, the same goes for my grandfather as well. I remember that as a young boy, the first time I ever received applause in the classroom was when I talked about the history of golf. I guess everyone was surprised to see an eight year old knowing so much about an adult’s game. Actually, I can still remember it vividly now.

The Chinese, French, Dutch and Scottish all have solid claims to the origin of golf. As early as the year 1297, on February 26 of that year to be exact, golf was already mentioned in Holland in a city known as Loenen aan de Vecht. In that place, the Dutch played the game with a stick and a leather ball. The person who hit the ball at a target several hundred meters away the most number of times won the game.

Hobbies can take almost any direction and form. From escaping into the unknown wilderness of a nearest national park to creating the cake of your best friend’s wedding, your hobbies reflect a part of your personality; obvious or rather well hidden. Some of my favorite hobbies include painting, traveling, conversing, cooking and dinning, walking and doing things on my own. Like many people around the globe, I take joy out of making things with my hands and exercise my mind in discovering new ways of using old things one would throw out instantly as waste. If you think this article is not for you, try remembering your grandma’s best recipe or when was the last time you found a new way to use those worn out clothes. Now maybe you can understand why making things can become a relaxing recreational experience that has a direct result and costs almost nothing more than time; which you will spend anyway, if you are determined to find at a store that special piece you are looking for.

How Chess Terms Were Derived

Friday, October 27th, 2006

I’ve always been fascinated by chess. Today, I’m a whiz at planning strategy and using the various pieces to best advantage. But I still remember how I got hooked on chess as a young kid. Of course, like most kids, my love affair with chess started by watching my elders play. My eyebrows would always rise and I would always be spellbound whenever one of my elder cousins would exclaim “checkmate which a triumphant smile and a gleam in his eyes. I told myself, I want that feeling, too. So, I started to play chess.

When I found out exactly how checkmate got its meaning, I was hooked all the more. Apparently, the word ‘checkmate’ comes from the English translation of the Persian phras “shah mat which means “the king is finished. As an impressionable young child with dreams of heroism and courage in warfare, slaying an opponent’s king was the ultimate for me. And even the pieces have such interesting meanings.
