Can Drinking Red Wine Reduce Risk of Alzheimers?
December 20th, 2006According to new research, red wine may help sharpen the mind and reduce risk factors associated with Alzheimers disease. Red wines contain the compound resveratrol, which has been found to reduce levels of amyloid-beta peptides. Those are responsible for killing brain cells, loss of short-term memory, judgment and attention span. The study, appearing in the journal Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, compared three groups of mice: one group consumed Cabernet Sauvignon, another ethanol and another drank only water. After seven month, the mice that drank Cabernet Sauvignon averaged 50 percent fewer amyloid-beta plaques than the mice that drank water. This group of Cabernet drinking mice also performed better than the others in cognitive tests.
