Rice and cotton plantation owners built the first homes in Bluffton during the 1800s. The town was officially incorporated by the South Carolina Assembly in 1852. Much of Bluffton was burned during the Civil War Period but is now a thriving community and a leader in tourism.
Only a few buildings remained. The Church of the Cross, which was spared during the war, is an attraction you will not want to miss. From this astonishing sight you will get a bird’s eye view of the May River.
Bluffton is rapidly developing and is currently among the fastest growing towns in the state of South Carolina. Its streets are filled with bed & breakfasts, churches, antebellum homes, and many eccentric shops.
