Local Sports News Becoming More and More Popular

I have worked as a freelance sports writer for nearly six years, and I have covered a number of local sporting events. One thing that I have noticed over that span is that the popularity of local sports news has increased tremendously.

I remember sitting at a softball game for a local high school that has a pretty strong program and being approached by a number of parents about the team. They asked me all kinds of questions about statistics, players and other teams against which they would be competing. I was happy to answer their questions, but it was a little distracting while I was trying to work.

When I wrote the article for the newspaper and submitted it, I wondered what kind of reaction it would get with the group of fans that was so interested in local sports news. Most of them were happy with the coverage and wanted more copies of the paper, but I did have a few parents call the paper with questions about some of my observances.

I covered a hockey game the next week, and it was the same kind of scenario. Fans came out of the woodwork to ask me questions about their opponent, who I expected to have big games and what I thought about their team’s chances in the postseason.

I started to understand that the reason I was being asked so many questions about the team is because local sports news has become more popular, and I was their main source for that news.

It occurred to me that I could bring in a few extra bucks a month by starting a web site to report on local sports news in my spare time.

I started up my first blog about a month and a half a go, and have already had more than 7,000 page impressions and all kinds of positive comments. Parents, coaches, teachers and fans were all ecstatic that they now had a place they could go to read the latest news on their local teams and other schools in the area.

The site really fills a niche, because there are all kinds of sites devoted to the coverage of college and professional sports teams, but not many created exclusively for covering local sports news. Most people have to go their local newspaper’s web site to find that kind of information.

Local sports news is becoming more and more popular and with good reason. Local sports teams are visible within the community, do not cost an exorbitant amount to go and see, and the athletes play for the love of the game rather than for a multimillion-dollar contract. As long as there is a need for coverage of such news, I will be there to provide it.
