Why the World Needs to Go Green

The last few decades saw great devastation brought about by natural disasters across the planet. The Earth as we know it is a far cry from what it was millions of years ago but the fast changing climate is said to be going back to how it was during those pre-historic times. Now, more than ever, the plea to stop global warming is getting louder and louder. People are starting to realize that steps should be seriously taken to prevent the future generation from experiencing the horrific effects of climate change.

The realization that many people now face comes in the wake of hurricanes raising houses to the ground, of torrential rains that never seem to stop unless it flushes with it lives and properties and of melting ice caps that have increased sea level and flooding low lying areas. The global climate has increase tremendously over the century but was aggravated over the last few decades because of crimes committed by mankind against the environment. One is the illegal cutting of trees and denudation of forests. Trees are essential in holding soil firmly intact especially in mountainous regions. Once uprooted, the soil loses firmness and is prone to erosion when rains come. Moreover, trees filter off toxic chemicals in the air we breath and give off oxygen for human consumption. The depletion of trees has increased our exposure to lung diseases and other respiratory infections.

We may be hearing advocacy about the protection of our environment lately but more than a decade ago, several nations banded together to commit themselves to minimize, if not eradicate, human malpractices that affect the global climate and atmosphere. They have signed a treaty that holds them responsible for the decrease in greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. This could become a green win solution.
The measures we take to address environmental concerns may seem futile. The world needs to go green to protect what few natural resources we have left. Animal and plant species are being erased from existence one by one and mankind may be the next to face extinction if we continue to live without taking responsibility for our actions leading to environmental degradation.
