Heading for Cape Town the Highlight of your Travel to Africa – when it’s Affordable

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

It was only six months ago that I returned to Africa. It was exactly the right time for anyone who’ll love a spruced up South Africa, but who will want fervently to keep away from the raucous crowds that inevitably follow the World Cup anywhere in the world. I particularly liked the time I spent in Cape Town in my travel to Africa this time around. It was summer in the southern hemisphere, but curiously, the sun wasn’t as hot as it usually is at this time of the year.

There is a certain quality to Cape Town – it seems impossible to tame, as much as the city has been built up. Right outside the city are the wide-open skies, awesome canyons, the freezing Atlantic, and vast white sands beaches with seals and pelicans flopping about in all their wild glory. There is something so remote about Cape Town, that it makes you feel like you’re in some kind of a tropical Alaska. It’s that grand, it is that vast, it is untamed. If you have never been to Alaska, travel to Africa, and come to Cape Town. This windswept corner of the world will transport you somehow to reaches far, far away.

This isn’t a fact that escaped the early Dutch settlers, or one that escapes today’s Capetonians. There are beach communities who live right along the beaches living the rugged life; and then there are the depressing shantytowns that line both sides of the road on your way to the international airport. Like shantytowns elsewhere in the world these are filled with desperation, poverty, unemployment and alcohol. To lots of western tourists who travel to Africa, poverty tourism is a part of the attraction. The thing is, South Africa is particularly affordable now. The local currency, the Rand, has been devalued repeatedly over the last few years, thanks to political trouble in countries around. When you travel here, be pleasantly surprised at how much your dollar can buy.

Let’s say you take the best room in the fashionable Constantia boutique hotel in the Constantia Valley. A room like that would probably set you back $1000 stateside. Here, it’s fallen to no more than $345 today. The same goes for your trips to the best local restaurants, renting a car, safaris and the most breathtaking wildlife reserves. You could probably take in all of that for no more than $250 a day, and you travel first class all the way. This is a great time to travel to Africa.

As for the eating out in part, Cape Town could actually make it worthwhile if you were to travel to Africa just for the cuisine. There’s been a revolution of sorts here in this department in the last 10 years. But sometimes, it can be a little hard to get to. Take the Foodbarn in Noordhoek for instance (did you know that the beach out there is spectacular and untouched by tourists and everyone else?); getting there can be quite a trick, but it can be worth it. The affluent beachside community there feels disturbingly like something you’d see in California. And here you find the Foodbarn, which has been named South Africa’s best restaurant several times in a row. It’s a bistro dedicated to experimental cuisine that borrows from the Middle East, North Africa, Asia and French Provençal.

The highlight of your travel to Africa if you choose to make it that, could well be your visit to Cape Town. Take the Table Mountain for instance. Of course the monolithic mountain is a rare sight; but the way it is surrounded by tropical greenery, with natural wildflowers, is something else. The Kristenbosch botanical gardens are in the region, and for a $3 entry fee, you go past immaculately maintained plants that are riot of color. There is too much to be seen here to describe in one article; but all the serenity, beauty and majestic wilderness you always wanted out of Africa is right here exactly where you want it. You only need to make the trip.

Johannesburg – the Soul of your South Africa Vacation

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Johannesburg is the very spirit of South Africa, in some ways; and a South Africa vacation would not be complete without a civilized introduction to the city. Let’s cover a little bit of everything in Johannesburg, and take in a couple of day trips right outside the city too. Johannesburg has great shopping; spend time rifling through a bunch of attractive ethnic handicrafts and other odds and ends, and be sure to try Deer Hunter in Greenside; you’ll find it on Greenway Road. The reason it’s such a great place for souvenir hunters to go to is, the good folks who run the shop scour artisan workshops and collectors across the country for the best stuff to bring stock. Apart from your usual ethnic paintings and clothes, you’ll also find great old records and movie memorabilia. There are so many interesting little knick-knacks in there that you’ll find yourself lingering next to any number of little objects, probably reminded of one little thing or another there that caught your fancy when you were a child. If you are interested in antiques, try the boutiques on Queen Street in Kensington (in Johannesburg, not London).

Johannesburg has great cosmopolitan food. Try the Pimento (no, they don’t just serve chili) for great South African versions of Italian originals like pizza, pasta and filet steaks. Or how about the Lapa Fo in Emmarentia on Barry Hertzog Avenue? They make dozens of kinds of pizza too. If you hanker after something a little less Mediterranean, try the sandwiches at Solly’s Corner on Bree Street; they’ve made a kind of reputation for themselves, and people from all over the world make a point of coming here when they come on a South Africa vacation. For coffee, the local Starbucks knockoff, Vida E Caffè, is pretty good.

So there was your standard Johannesburg day out. How about exploring the places around, for a little improved perspective though? One of the best day trips there are to be had, involves a trip to the mountain range of Drakensberg, a couple of hundred miles from Johannesburg. There’s a lot of great rugged activity to be had, horseback riding, fishing and so on. If you can’t venture that far, try Parys, a kind of historic old town set up with great antique stores and antique restaurants. And if you have even less time, try Lion Park, a place you can hold a lion cub in your hands. It’ll really make your day on this South Africa vacation.

If you have a little more time, The Cradle of Humankind is a wonderful day trip no more than a half-hour’s drive out of Johannesburg. This educational tour has something for everyone. Children will love all the outdoors experiences walking among the digs and the exhibits, and they will love the Rhino and Lion Nature Preserve. Those with more sophisticated tastes will love all the indoor exhibits of some of the oldest known artifacts from prehistory ever found. There is a great theme restaurant here called the Cradle Restaurant to round out your visit. No South Africa vacation would be complete without this one.

If on your South Africa vacation, you like the reassurance of having an experienced travel guide at your side giving you the perspective of a local, you cannot go wrong with Face to Face tours. Of course, there’s nothing quite like it if you have the luxury of your own personal tour guide.

What Is Most Important In An Off Road Trailer

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

A rugged heavy duty off road trailer is one that will give you great service and not let you down when you need it most. For activities such as camping, four wheeling, and others, your off road trailer is going to be a big part of your investment that you have to be able to depend on. The experts say that a good off road trailer will have a more lengthy draw bar and will give you better control and the ability to better negotiate the terrain of an off road area. Echo4X4 is one such expert who has more information on all off road equipment.

2,700 kilometers from the Etosha National Park to the dunes of the Namib Desert in a Mercedes-Benz Classic

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Namibia is a vast country of desert and dunes, mountains and canyons. It is home to herds of giraffes, springboks and antelopes that roam its savanah, and to the legendary ‘big five’ of elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards and buffalo. You can drive for hours on end from one remote lodge to the next without meeting another vehicle along the dusty track that stretches as far as the eye can see to the shimmering horizon. Herman van Wyk and his traveling companion Hentie Champion are taking ten days to show the team from the Mercedes-Benz Classic magazine a few highlights of their country – in style, of course, in a light-blue 220 S from 1959. The fact that retired publisher van Wyk, who lives in Namibia’s capital city Windhoek, owns this precise Ponton vehicle is not a coincidence, his father used to have a shop in the small town of Okahandja, supplying the farmers in the surrounding area with everything they needed for their work. In 1959 he bought himself a 220 S, and van Wyk went out with his father a lot. According to van Wyk, the metallic green Ponton sedan did sterling work on the country’s rough tracks, as only the main road from Windhoek was properly surfaced in those days. Herman van Wyk developed something of a soft spot for automobiles bearing the three pointed star. The energetic Namibian is taking the pride and joy of his garage on regular outings with the Old Wheelers Club, covering an average of probably about 250 kilometers a year. For the team from the Mercedes-Benz Classic magazine, van Wyk was prepared to make something of an exception: he and his old friend Hentie Champion drove 2,700 kilometers, all the way from Etosha National Park and its teeming wildlifein the north to the dunes of the Namib Desert in the south in his light-blue 220 S! Always Plan Ahead for Your 4×4 Adventure

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Nothing can kill your 4×4 and camping trip quicker than realizing that you aren’t quite as prepared as you should be. One of the most tedious and time consuming parts of 4×4 camping is planning and preparing the food that you will eat. Luckily, quality 4×4 camping trailers have cooking facilities, which makes things much more convenient. However, that doesn’t mean that planning isn’t needed. After all, you will probably be far away from grocery facilities once you get to your destination. In addition, you need to be sure to pack high energy food that doesn’t weigh a lot for the days you will be on the trail. For more info on 4X4 and camping trip visit Echo’s website.

Hunting tips and African safaris

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

African safaris were made famous by Hemingway and the tradition continues to this day with African safari tours and even a lion safari can be had.

In one way or another, we have all had contact with the work or read about the life of the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. We certainly don’t associate Hemingway with African safaris or wilderness.

Those who know a bit about the man have read of swashbuckling tales of drinking, bull fighting and hard living. We knew him as an avid sportsman who even penned one of his great books, The Sun Also Rises, around the annual running of the bulls in Spain.

This hunting tips page of the hunting SD site is for misc items and interests that don’t fit well anywhere else on the site. Everything on this page will be hunting related, whether it be books, equipment or even a friendly site or hunting site with information you might be able to use.

Experience everything that makes Mercedes-Benz special – Experience the A-Class

Monday, December 14th, 2009

The A-Class is all about outstanding practicality that goes hand in hand with aesthetic pleasure. Despite the compact exterior dimensions, even the rear passengers can relax in plenty of space. The A-Class has a wealth of practical details as part of the standard equipment package on offer: air conditioning, an on-board computer, a multi-function steering wheel, as well as the standard-fit hill-start assist, which makes hill starts much easier by maintaining the brake pressure for a short time and thus preventing the car from rolling backwards unintentionally. Optional equipment: a panoramic sunroof
offering a clear view of the sky and a removable armrest with through-loading feature in the middle of the rear compartment. Plus the optional EASY-VARIO system allows you to simply raise the cushions of the rear seats, fold the backrests forward and move the height-adjustable load-compartment floor into its higher position. The 1: 2 split-folding rear seats are fitted as standard, so you can fold down the right section of the rear-seat unit and still carry a rear passenger on the left. The A-Class is packed with the latest safety technology. For example, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and acceleration skid control (ASR) – help you to remain in better control in dangerous driving situations. Brake Assist (BAS)
helps to build up the maximum braking pressure whilst the familiar anti-lock braking system (ABS) prevents the wheels from locking up. Plus the A-Class now features adaptive brake lights as standard: in
the event of an emergency stop when travelling at over 50 km/h, the brake lamps start flashing several times a second to warn any vehicles behind, thus potentially shortening their stopping distance
decisively. Even in an emergency, you can count on the A-Class. Its high level of safety is partly down to its form: in the event of a frontal impact, the engine and transmission slide along the inclined pedal floor and under the passenger compartment. This intelligent form of crumple zone reduces the risk of occupant injury substantially. If there is a rear impact, the front head restraints are activated to help prevent whiplash injuries. Here the distance between the occupant’s head and the head restraint is shortened in order to reduce whiplash. The aim of Mercedes-Benz is to ensure that you arrive at your destination save and sound. For driving pleasure the A-Class engines are packed with power. The petrol
line-up comprises the A180 (85 kW) and the A200 (100 kW) . There is also a diesel model, the A180 CDI (80 kW). Despite so much power, all the engines are models of modesty when it comes to fuel consumption. The secret is reduced friction losses in the engine, a high compression ratio and improved in-cylinder flow.
For more information on the Mercedes-Benz A-class contact your Mercedes-Benz East Rand dealer.

Where to go in Southern Africa for big game or dangerous game hunting

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Big game hunting packages are normally available in Zimbabwe, the South African Natal Midlands, and other areas such as Mozambique, Botswana, and Namibia. The dangerous game hunting as offered in South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia or one of the other Southern African countries includes the likes of lion, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and buffalo as the hunted animals. Please view the dangerous game section on the World to Africa website for complete packages on offer and contact them to discuss your particular hunt preferences.

Buffalo hunting in Southern Africa

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Buffalo normaly gathers in herds where grazing and water is plentiful on the open savanna. They tend to seek shade in the hot part of the day and would rather graze at night and in the cooler part of the day. They can look like a boulder at first glance because their color is greyish-black. Buffalo are therefore exceptionally well camouflaged in dense cover, even though they are very large. Both males and females have horns, with the males developing the much desired gnarled bosses as they get older. The eyesight and hearing of buffalos are poor but their sense of smell is excellent. Because of this, it is much harder to get close to a herd of buffalo than a single bull. Buffalo hunting are so exciting because it is mainley done on foot. To look for, picking up and following fresh spoor from waterholes gives you a thrill like no other. You will find older bulls seperated from herds in small bachelor groups or solitary. The addrenaline rush of hunting this mountain of muscle and attitude is unrivaled and addictive. some countries have buffalo listed as protected game although they are not considered and endangered species, so you have to get special permits to be able to hunt them. Buffalo hunting and the buffalo’s dangerous nature when wounded has been documented by all the great hunters and on various video footage. Each situation is unique and buffalo are one of the most dangerous animals when wounded. Despite their size they are extremely quick and cunning at camouflage, as they remain absolutely still until one is right upon them. Contact World to Africa Hunting for more information of buffalo hunting.

Bow hunting methods in South Africa

Friday, November 13th, 2009

It was interesting to read on the various methods used on bow hunting safaris. Here is what I discovered:
Stalking is the hunt method used for animals that are rarely spotted at waterholes. The typical species hunted in this way is Nyala, Klipspringer, Bushbuck and Duiker. The areas used for this type of hunt
method normally have water streams and thick bush vegetation, hills, and valleys. The best time for this type of bow hunt method is from April-June.

Blinds: You will be able to hunt Zebra, Red Hartebeest, Warthog, Eland, Impala, Baboon, and Blue Wildebeest in this manner. From elevated to ground blinds are utilized for both the sitting and the
standing bow hunter.

The opportunity driven method of hunting is when animals are located through the use of a vehicle. Once spotted the stalk on foot starts. The archer can also be dropped of downwind from the animals while the game will then slowly be driven to the archer. It requires a lot of space and also patience. Any of the above species can be hunted in this way.

When it comes to plains and dangerous game hunting it is recommended that you first consult with a professional hunter on the requirements to ensure that you make use of the correct bows and arrows. For more articles on hunting I found the World to Africa website informative.

Hunting Areas in Africa (Mozambique – Cabo Delgado)

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

On the coast of the Indian Ocean, bordered by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, Mozambique is one of the least-developed countries in Southern Africa. Bisected north and south by the Zambezi River, Mozambique’s terrain runs from thick forests to swamplands and even palm forests. With its coastal proximity, the climate is mostly tropical. Leopard, lion, Cape buffalo, elephant and hippo are among the high-quality trophies taken on Mozambique safaris. There are also good numbers of trophy quality southern greater kudu, Chobe bushbuck, nyala, eland and crocodile. Cabo Delgado is the northernmost province of Mozambique.
Depending on the time of year, up to 30% of the area is wetland with enormous swampy plains. On these plains one can on occasion see herds of several hundred buffalo and it is also here that most of our buffalo hunting is done. The area is blessed with herds of animals as it was described in the old days. The region is original, unspoiled and truly unique, offering a large selection of truly free ranging, wild game. It is one of the few places where you can hunt in unfenced, remote wilderness. The greater area has thousands of buffalo. The wilderness is generally doing well and species diversity, game numbers and trophy quality are improving every year. The area is also unique in its habitat diversity with large rivers, swamps, grassy plains and forests each contributing to the large animal diversity.

Do’s and Don’t of Planning and Booking an Africa Hunting Safari

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Do’s
If you use a booking agent in your country always ask him for references of previous clients and contact them to make sure the agent did perform to their expectations. A full-time booking agent with a good track record will know the outfitter and most of the times hunted with him before. Ask them about the outfitter the hunt will be booked with, as the agents usually book with more then one outfitter depending on which animals you are looking to hunt. Any good outfitter will have at least a website with general information about packages, prices, accommodation a photo gallery etc. Also ask him for references in your country and contact them to get an impression about the trophy quality, service and any information that you are unsure about. The outfitter must assist you and the agent to plan the hunt to the last detail. Make sure you get all the information correct and sign a Safari Confirmation Contract with prices, payment terms, dates of arrival/departure, trophies you plan on taking, food and accommodation preferences before paying a deposit.

Don’ts
You must never just book with the first agent you meet and be lured by cheap hunting packages. There are so many clients that book with agents and travel all the way to Africa and are disappointed with the “Special Deal.” The outfitter must be involved in the booking process to confirm that the dates and species you are looking for are available. When you buy any product there are price tags to it and the same goes for hunting. All the Hunting farms/ranches in South Africa are privately owned and it cost a lot of money to maintain and manage for the foreign trophy hunting client. Never book any hunt before making sure the outfitter and professional hunter are known in the local market. Make sure the outfitter is operating within the laws and contact PHASA (Professional Hunters Association of South Africa) or the local Nature Conservation Department in the Province you plan on hunting. They will confirm that the Professional Hunter and Outfitter are registered and in “good standing” with them.
Get the paperwork signed and sorted before leaving on your Hunting Safari, don’t leave it until you arrive in a foreign country. Make sure that outfitter did receive a signed copy of the Safari Confirmation Contract and flight details. Always contact him well in advance to discuss any details about your hunt and travel arrangement. Any good outfitter will get the paperwork in order before you arrive and just discuss the details of the hunt with you upon arrival at the Hunting Lodge.

If you follow these few basic tips you will have a great African Hunting Safari and will want to return again for more!!
