Exhausted and depleted of supplies, the men at last arrive at a mysterious city in the highlands of the interior….read more at The Sequel to King Solomons Mines

Misquito repellant

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

These is a great article i found on www.tents.info So I was staying up at my brother’s hidden cabin last summer. He thinks it’s so cool because it was constructed completely by hand. An Amish group built it for him. Okay, who am I kidding? That is one sweet little cabin.

It has a loft and a wood stove. What else could a nature buff ask for? Anyway, I made certain to bring a few cans of mosquito repellant.

I knew those little devils would be thick up there in the month of July.

Kilimanjaro The Top Of Africa

Friday, January 19th, 2007

After 8 hours of hiking, watching Orion rise in the distance, a beautiful sunrise from Kilimanjaro and freezing cold winds, I got to Stella point. After a short break, I headed on to Uhuru and reached it with Karel as the first of our group. About 10 minutes later a few others showed up and we took more photos. This is my kilimanjaro summit photo. It’s also available in a larger format, just click the picture.

Nigeria in Brief

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa and the most populous country on the African continent. Nigeria shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, Niger in the north, and borders the Gulf of Guinea in the south. Since 1991, its capital has been the centrally-located city of Abuja; previously, the Nigerian government was headquartered in Lagos.

The people of Nigeria have an extensive history, and based on archaeological evidence, human habitation of the area dates back to at least 9000 BC. The Benue-Cross River area is thought to be the original homeland of the Bantu migrants who spread across most of central and southern Africa in waves between the 1st millennium BC and the 2nd millennium AD. However, the Nigerian state came into being on October 1, 1960 when Nigeria declared its independence from the British and at present consists of 36 states and the federal capital territory. Nigeria re-achieved democracy in 1999 after a sixteen-year interruption by a series of military dictators. From 1966 until 1999, Nigeria had been ruled (except the short-lived second republic, 1979-1983) by military dictators who seized power in coups d’état and counter-coups.

My Take on African Culture

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

I would bet that most cultures are in some ways “culture”, simply because they have unique traditions. You get to learn new things. One thing I found funny was a fellow student’s remark during a review session. She made a comment about African culture and black people in general. She claimed that they don’t like other races experiencing and/or practicing their culture. Hmm, this isn’t a bad point, but I wouldn’t make the statement so exclusive.

Obviously, I believe this is present in African culture and sub-culture, just as it is in the Nigerian, British or Canadian cultures. It has nothing to do with race, but a lot to do with being human.

South Africa- A Shinning Example of Democracy in Africa

Monday, November 20th, 2006

South Africa is one of the few in Africa never to have had a coup d’état, and regular democratic elections have been held for almost a century; however, the vast majority of black South Africans were not enfranchised until 1994. The economy of South Africa is the largest and best developed on the continent, with modern infrastructure common throughout the country.

Nigeria’s Brief Return to Democracy in the late 1970s…

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Nigerians participated in a brief return to democracy beginning in 1979 when Obasanjo transferred power to the civilian regime of Shehu Shagari. The Shagari government was viewed as corrupt and incompetent by virtually all sectors of Nigerian society, so when the regime was overthrown by the military coup of Mohammadu Buhari shortly after the regime’s fraudulent re-election in 1984, it was generally viewed as a positive development by most of the population. Buhari promised major reforms but his government proved little better than its predecessor, and his regime was overthrown via yet another military coup in 1986.

Dreaming Of An African Vacation

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

The main reason to visit Africa for me would be to get as close to the animals as possible. I’d make sure I was fully capable of shooting some good video footage of my Africa vacation too, to back up the stories I’d tell when I got home! If you prefer something more sedate, there are walking safaris. Air safaris are another choice, which offer spectacular aerial views of the scenery and the movement of game.

Misquito repellant

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

From www.tents.info Bugs, bugs, bugs! Say goodbye to those nasty, bothersome insects and bugs for the year. The cold weather is near. You know that this means they will all perish with that first frost. Or at least a great many of them will. I suppose a few will fly south and some will hide. The point is you won’t be needing misquito repellant and numerous other DEET products. As much as I hate spraying this gunk all over myself daily during the summer months, I hate the bug bites worse. It always makes me laugh the way folks gripe about arachnids. Spiders may sneak into your basement or closet on occasion, but at least they don’t attack you relentlessly.

African Safari Hunting

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

I have been a big fan of African safari hunts for a long time – ever since my grand father first took me. Of course, my grampa was the real deal. African safari hunting was not something that he took lightly – not at all. You see, good old gramps was a British civil servant, and part of the long tradition of colonial rule that prided itself on its marksmanship as much as on its professionalism and its service to the crown and country. You really could say that African safari hunting was in our blood, ever since my great grandfather worked for the British East India tea company. The fact is, for members of the British nobility, hunting has always been a whole lot more than just simply a matter of sport. It is a tradition which dates all the way back before the mob rule more popularly known as democracy in this insane modern rule. Although fox hunting is an older, and in some ways a richer tradition, for many Brits, African safari hunting has become just as key a part of their lifestyle as has the older form of hunting.
