The first summer camp California I went to was a fairly traditional one. It was a San Francisco summer camp, targeted towards elementary school kids like me, and had all of the standard activities. There was arts and crafts, waterfront sports, volleyball, tennis, and hiking. The hiking was my favorite. California summer camps have some of the best hiking in the world because California has some of the best outdoors in the world. We would hike for miles and miles along twisting trails through the woods. I now know that I was always within a mile of my California summer camp, but back then I felt like I was lost in the wilderness.

When one thinks of sunshine, golden sands and surfers riding the waves, Malibu California easily comes to mind. This Pacific coastal city in Los Angeles County is home to many movie stars and other celebrities. The area has been used as a location for numerous films and television shows, including drive-in surfer movies from the 1960s. Filming usually takes place on the beachfront or against the backdrop of the Santa Monica Mountains. The beaches are very popular with tourists; two of the most frequented ones are Zuma and Leo Carrillo State Beach.

Be alert for slippery areas and take your time to avoid tripping. Low-hanging branches and variable terrains make running unsafe, and leaves can hide slippery areas underneath.
Alcohol and cliffs don’t mix! If you drink, stay away from the cliffs. Judgment, agility, and balance are all reduced by alcohol consumption.

During the months of January through April, thousands of gray whales make their way down the Pacific coast to birth their calves, and many continue their travels around the tip of Los Cabos into the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez! It is not uncommon to be hanging out in the pool at your resort and spot a whale breaching in the near distance. What a sight to see!. I’ve experienced this myself, and it is truly spectacular! If you want a closer view, you can charter a whale watching trip that includes drinks, snacks, and dinner with transportation to and from your hotel.

That Napa Valley bed and breakfast wasn’t the first B&B that we stayed at, but it was certainly the most comprehensive. The property included its own private vineyard and small winery, which allowed us to indulge in a bit of the wine-tasting that we were looking forward to. In addition, our Napa Valley bed and breakfast also had a full-service spa on the premises and was adjacent to a beautiful golf course. With all of those activities right there at our disposal, plus a lovely room to boot, it’s no wonder that we were content to stay right there at our Napa Valley bed and breakfast for most of our vacation.

All year round events are possible in a state that enjoys more sunshine than most. Annual California events cover a wide range, including sporting and cultural affairs. There are several events that celebrate the Christmas and Easter holidays and Halloween too. The area is especially enthusiastic about food and wine festivals. The calendar is full throughout the year and one of the early treats is the Tournament of Roses Parade held in Pasadena in January. This involves a floral flotilla, marching bands and horse displays. Following the parade is the much anticipated college football match, played as the Rose Bowl Game.
