Hunting tips and African safaris

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

African safaris were made famous by Hemingway and the tradition continues to this day with African safari tours and even a lion safari can be had.

In one way or another, we have all had contact with the work or read about the life of the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. We certainly don’t associate Hemingway with African safaris or wilderness.

Those who know a bit about the man have read of swashbuckling tales of drinking, bull fighting and hard living. We knew him as an avid sportsman who even penned one of his great books, The Sun Also Rises, around the annual running of the bulls in Spain.

Bryce Canyon: Day Hikes At Bryce Canyon

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Bryce Canyon National Park has over 50 miles of hiking trails with varying difficulties. A good many of theses hikes center in and around the Bryce Amphitheater, where there exists a large number of eroded rock formations, or hoodoos. There’s a lot more to Bryce canyon, don’t miss it…

Day Hikes:

Fairyland Loop:
This is a strenuous hike that will take you through spectacular hoodoos and beautiful scenery across the rim and into the canyon. It covers 8 miles of meandering trails with many elevation changes, so take plenty of water. The hike will usually take between 4 and 5 hours. The trail has a spur to Tower Bridge and integrates the Rim Trail from Sunset Point to Fairyland Point.

Navajo Loop:

This trail is one of the more popular trails, although there was a rock slide on the Wall Street side in the Spring of 09 that closed off a large portion of the trail. Extreme caution is advised for this reason. This trail will take you to Two Bridges, Thors Hammer and Wall Street.

Peekaboo Loop:

From Bryce Point this trail makes a quick descent to the canyon floor. This 5.5 mile hike is considered strenuous due to the rapid elevation change and the fact that there are many trail rides involving horses and mules. The hike will take you past Wall of Windows and Three Wisemen. Pit toilets and picknic areas in the canyon.

Queen’s Garden :
This trail is considered the least difficult trail that travels to the canyon floor. Descending 320 feet, you will see lots of hoodoos on this hike. The trail is a 1.8 mile jaunt from Sunrise Point, but it is not a loop.

Ideas for an Overseas Adventure Travel

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Indeed, adventure travel can be one of the most exciting and gratifying travel one can experience. However, with the exotic places, wilderness, and virgin forests that one might consider, it is a must that every travel must know the proper way how to protect themselves and what to do first before trying the place out. More recently, my international adventure travel took me to Ecuador. While there I climbed to the furthest point from the center of the Earth. Everest is highest above sea level, but due to the Earth’s bulge at the equator, the peak of Mount Chimborazo, at 20,600 feet, is farther from from the center of our planet. The top is all snow, ice, and glaciers.

One tank trips

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Americans are in a state of shock over the price of gas to fuel our cars, as well we should be. Our entire infrastructure of highways was built, way back in the day, to facilitate our exploration of this huge country. Now, weíre wondering if we can get to work and back. We used to think nothing of packing up the family for a four-day weekend holiday to some faraway destination. The cost of gas was hardly considered.

Now, we find ourselves seriously curtailing our vacation plans to accommodate that thirsty and expensive gas tank. As a result, the media has coined a new phrase. Travel agents now hasten to come up with ëone tank tripsí. So what is a one tank trip? Itís certainly a weird phrase, but when you take a moment to think about it, itís a phrase that describes a getaway by car, which can be accomplished on a single tank of gas.

It’s odd that this gas crunch should force us to…

Travel Missouri with the guide

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

If you are going to travel around the state of Missouri you really need to pick up a copy of the Missouri travel guide. In that small booklet you will find a wealth of information about the state and the things to see and do here. There are many attractions that are pointed out that you would miss if you didn’t know about them, such as the largest collection of electric pole insulators in the world. Really, wouldn’t you just kick yourself if you were close to that one and missed it? I know I would. Of course there is a whole section dedicated to Branson, the one town in Missouri built almost completely with tourism dollars. There is also an entire section based on the Ozark mountain area, one of the most spectacular places in the world. Of course all the lakes can’t be mentioned as there are too many but there is quite a bit on Table Rock Lake and the surrounding area. It will show you where the best fishing spots are and where you are likely to see a rock concert. All in all it is a well put together representation of what the state of Missouri has to offer.

The unknown caves of northeast Iowa

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

If you like to travel you should check out the northeast Iowa tourism attractions. There are a few things about the area that are little known except for the locals. For instance did you know that area was full of underground caves? They are formed because the rock around there is mostly limestone and the water running underground in the area easily dissolves this rock forming a cave. The farmers of the area are well aware of the fact as every once in a while a farmer will unknowingly park his tractor over one of these caves and leave. When he returns he finds that implement at the bottom of a sink hole. The weight of the machine having cracked through the thin ceiling of the cave after time vs weight hit the right point. The only way to recover the tractor is to rent a large helicopter and have it lifted out of the hole, not an inexpensive chore. Many of these caves are actually very small and some of them are quite large. Exploring caves is not a big pastime in the area so it is unknown just how many of these caves there are in the area.

Travel in western Iowa

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

I wanted to do some traveling close to home, somewhere in the western Iowa tourism region, so I grabbed the car keys and hit I29 north. There were some really wonderful views of the hills from the interstate. If people think Iowa is all flat they should see this side of the state. The hills were made by blowing dust in prehistoric times. The dirt piled up much like sand dunes and formed some magnificent cliffs and bluffs. In fact, for those lf you who don’t know, it was these bluffs that Council Bluffs was named for. On the other side of the highway you can catch glimpses of the Missouri river in all of it’s splendor. I pulled into some kind of sanctuary along the way and there was a tour going on. It seems the migration north has started for several species of birds. I observed eagles which I was told now nest in the area. There were also quite a few geese but they were all Canadian geese, as I was growing up we lived on the flight path for geese and I remember there were always snow geese along with the Canadian geese. Maybe it was just because it was a different flight path.

Have you ever thought of camping as romantic?

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

I was recently married and was looking for a honeymoon. When you think about romantic Illinois vacations you rarely think of a camping trip. Open your horizens. Hiking down a remote trail hand in hand with your sweetheart can lead to all kinds of romance. Spending a warm afternoon at the beach lead to a lot of romance.  (There was a small lake at this campground with a swimming area.) We weren’t far from civilization so there was some fine dining just ten minutes away. Of course my campground cooking was not half bad and hers was even better. We were camping in a tent and the campground itself was rather crowded so the romance was somewhat limited at the home base, but in the woods, by the lake, on the trail, you can find all sorts of places to be alone and undisturbed for as long as you would like. Give it a try. Romance doesn’t have to be an elegant meal at an expensive restaurant with fancy waiters and an expensive bottle of wine followed by the theater. If you ask me that is boring. Give me a little isolation somewhere out in nature. A can of beer is just as good as a bottle of wine for losing the inhabitations.

Article on Camping Holidays

Family holidays and hotels don’t always go together as the kids like to let off steam. It’s better to be flexible when you have children and camping holidays suit many families. You can have a meal when you want and the kids can make friends with other kids on the campsite. No one minds a bit of noise, as long as they are tucked up in bed at a reasonable hour.

Exercise has become an integral part of everyday life of most people. An individual spends at least some part of his life in exercise. Exercise can be done with equipment or without equipment. Gym equipment helps in exercising a specific part or group of muscles or organs of the body. Today a wide range of gym equipment are available in the market.

A multigym consists of incremented weight plates that move up and down on steel guides. It usually consists of attachments for exercise of chest, arms, thighs, calves, shoulders and pectorals (sometimes called wings or pecs).

Make Sure You Buy the Right Hiking Boots

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

One of the most enjoyable activities there is, is to get outdoors and go hiking. I like to hike as often as I can so it is important that I have the right hiking boots on my feet. The last thing I want after a great hike is to have sore feet. However, there is more to buying hiking boots than going to the store and buying what looks best on the rack.

Having the best hiking boots you can buy can make a difference in not only your comfort, but your safety as well. When you go to the sports store in search of boots, you will need to have in mind the type of hiking you plan to be doing.

Hike Diamond Head in Hawaii

Monday, October 15th, 2007

I’m an avid hiker and like to go on hikes even when I go on vacation. I find hiking very relaxing. And that was definitely the case when I hiked Diamond Head in Hawaii. Most people go to Hawaii to lay out on the beach or surf. I found out about Diamond Head from this site called Dan’s Hawaii that has a ton of insightful information on attractions the locals only know about. True Diamond Head is one of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks but if you want to hike Diamond Head in Hawaii, you need to check out this site. It gave me all the details I needed to know to hike the trails and make the most of my Hawaiian hiking excursion. Thanks Dan!

People, Who Snow Ski, Must Be Crazy!

Friday, September 7th, 2007

It’s so cold, it’s so wet, and it’s so dangerous? Please let me share why we are not Crazy!

For Everyone.

Snow skiing is one of the really exciting sports that combine exhilaration, fellowship, ambience and adventure, for all levels of participants. In Europe, children are being taught to ski as young as 2 years old and on the same slopes there are people over 90 years young. There are people of every nationality, race, creed and colour. There are one armed, one legged and even blind people, involved everywhere, at some level. What is the appeal of a sport that brings so many different people together, amidst the cold snow, in the sprit of friendliness and just having a good time?

Ambience.

So you have finished your dinner and you sit in the armchairs in front of the roaring log fire. The shadows flicker gently on the walls as the flames continue their dance in the huge fireplace. You feel relaxed, comfortable and sleepy as you spend time with your new friends. For some, the cobwebs fill your brain and you drift off to sleep. Others will gain a second wind and be off to the local nightspot to party. And finally, you toddle off to bed and descend into the deep relaxing, well earned sleep, from which even the party goers returning home, cannot stir you.

Adventure.

Skiing is always an adventure. When as beginner, you go up to the first time on the chair lift and see the steepness of that blue slope, your heart starts to flutter. Exactly the same when, as an accomplished skier, you stand on top of the almost vertical expanse of virgin snow, spread out below you. It is an adventure when you are having lunch, high in the mountains, surrounded by the giant peaks and deep valleys that seem to go forever. And meeting men and women from all walks of life, foreign cultures, struggling with language and customs, is all part of the adventure.

So skiing is a passion for me. I learned to ski late in life and after finding it, discovered a wonderful world of fun, friendship and adventure. So you are welcome to my world and may you share in all of the above, and then some!!

Nevada Camping

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Echo Canyon State Park is suitable for tents and RVs and is 15 miles from the town of Pioche. This park is one of the most popular Nevada camping areas, known for its wildlife, fishing, hiking and swimming facilities. Some full hook ups are available and the campground has picnic areas. The campground is arranged around the 65 acre Echo Canyon Reservoir, which is stocked with bass, crappie and rainbow trout. There is a boat launch ramp for access on the water. The area promises sightings of herons, eagles, teals, coyotes and jackrabbits. Snow occasionally falls here through the winter.
