Track Days – Leathers Suits, Back Protectors What do You Really Need?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

“Track Days” are a new phenomena for many riders as well as the idea of wearing track day or full race leathers.

I can remember purchasing a 2000 ZX-12 and the dealer did not have any promotion materials or relationship with a track day provider. I mention this because such high performance bikes were designed to ride on the track (road race track and drag race strip) The words Track Day, were foreign to me and were never mentioned by the dealer.

What riders need to know for a track day (road race or drag race) is to understand what is required from them besides bringing their bike.
1) proper tools
2) full leathers (one or two piece)
3) correct tires
4) suspension & chassis set up
5) Focus

For a lot of us, the idea of purchasing a one piece or 2 piece Leather Race Suit just seems to be over the top. After all, not all of us race or care to do so. The idea of a 2 piece leather suit seems more inline because it gives us options and more flexibility. Just make sure you look for a suit that offers CE rated armor in the impact zones: shoulders, forearms, knees, shins. A Back Protector is an option, but a very good choice. Look for leather suits that offer double stitching in the impact zones, a nylon liner and quality zippers such as YKK. Yes, zippers make a difference. Also, the leather needs to be at least 1.2mm top grain, but if you can find an affordable suit that offers full grain (1.4mm leathers) then that is the best option overall.

Tire choice is also important as you’ll be on a race track where the surface is a lot different than riding on the concrete that you commute on. Also, suspension and chassis setup is also a big factor in how the bike will handle under acceleration, braking and at lean angles.

Also, bring a pen and pad; you’ll have class room instruction as well and will need to focus on what the instructors tell you. It makes a big difference to understand the track and what to expect. You’re also likely meet some good folks as it never hurts to make new friends. Think of your new friends like your new fraternal brothers; these are riders who, like you, want to learn to ride better and get the most from their bikes and riding gear.

Make Your Own Pike Fishing Lures

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

One of the most satisfying feelings you can experience when fishing is to catch a fish using a fishing lure you created yourself.

You don’t need to be a great craftsman to make your own fishing lures. If you can get hold of the couple of required tools, you can have some glorious lures. The lures might not quite be professionally perfect, but they will catch fish for you, and that’s all that matters the most.

And if you create your own lures, you’ll be far more successful at catching fish in the long run. The reason for this is psychological. An angler who uses a store-bought retard or hop tends to be wavering about cast of characters it around rocks, logs, piles, and rank and file of seaweed.

A species generally encountered in the northern fresh waters of the globe, pike is a favorite catch for many hobbyists. The maximum length one such fish can reach is 1.83 meters and its weight can go up to 35 kilograms.

If you are after pike, don’t forget to take special pike fishing lures, or you’ll fail to catch. But before concerning about what lures and accessories to use, it is good to find out about the eating habits specific to the species.

Usually lures and baits are inspired from the diet that each species of fish survives on. Pike feast on shoal fish and they sometimes prey on their smaller kin. Insects, amphibians and even ducklings are part of the menu if there is nothing better to find.

Duck hunting and snow goose hunting

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Duck hunting is a lot of fun and waterfowl hunting is one of the more popular hunting sports in the world. Duck and goose hunters are a pretty social group, on the whole and it’s as much a social calling as it is a hunt. If you’ve ever been to a Ducks Unlimited banquet you know what I mean. If you haven’t been to one I highly recommend you go.

Waterfowl hunting has a culture all its own and even has it’s own dress code. If you aren’t dressed right your buddies are going to laugh at you. Of course it also helps you stay concealed while in or out of a hunting blind. Warmth is also important so be sure to get good hunting clothes. It’s hard to hunt when you are shivering.

It’s almost time for spring snow goose hunting in Eastern South Dakota and the 2010 spring snow goose migration will be well underway by the end of March or earlier. Seems hunting is best right at the snow line and that’s where the geese are congregated or were. It’s a bit late to get some snow geese this year but next spring will be really good.

A federal snow goose stamp is not required and in SD you can shoot 20 snow geese per day with no possesion limit. For the cost of a license you can pretty much eat goose year around because there are sure a ton of them around waiting to be shot.

Ice fishing houses and winter bass fishing

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

If you’re looking for ice fishing houses rental in Eastern South Dakota around the Lake Thompson, Madison and Watertown areas you just found what you were looking for. There are two large ice fishing houses for rent. To make it even better both fish houses are new.

Ice fishing shacks are 8 by 20
Each fish house has ten holes
One wall heater per house
Battery hookup for lights in each
Four beds in each fish house
Easy set up
Each wheel cranks up individually including the hitch.

You should bring 1 additional small heater for the back of the fishing shack. Also I’d suggest a lantern to save on your battery.

When the water temperature dips below 50 degrees bass fishing becomes a real challenge. When the cold water temperatures of winter arrive bass head toward deep water. While in the fall you were able to find bass back in shallow coves and creeks where they were busy foraging preparing for long periods of winter inactivity, once the water temperatures drop they migrate away from these areas into the main body of the lake where they are able to find areas with deeper water. Often they will be found along sharp drops where they can move in and out of the deeper water into a more shallow area to feed. A depth finder will be an invaluable tool for winter bass fishing.

It is important to remember that because a bass is cold blooded, a decrease in temperature also brings a decrease in the fish’s activity level. This decrease in activity is a result of a decrease in the fish’s metabolism. Put simply, because a bass does not digest his food as quickly in winter he does not need to feed as often.

Athletic Shoes

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

I have worn athletic shoes for years. After all, they are comfortable, go well with most things, and are reasonably priced. I wore gym shoes when I was a kid, and I just never really grew out of it. I have only been wearing athletic shoes as an athlete for a little while, however, and am still getting used to it. I never really thought about the variety of tennis shoes before.

I used to just go into the athletic shoe store and buy a pair of whatever looked good to me and felt good on my feet. I have pretty wide feet, so most of the time I like to wear New Balance shoes. I have always felt that they fit my feet better than anything else out there. Sometimes I would come home with running shoes, other times I would be wearing basketball shoes on my feet, and still other times I would have nothing but a pair of Chuck Tailors. (more…)

Paint Balling for Beginners

Monday, December 14th, 2009

You probably have heard of one of the world’s fastest growing sports known as paint balling or more commonly referred to as “paintball”. This sport is a combination of many skills, and as such there is much more to it than simply running around the bush or field dressed up as “Rambo”.

Unfortunately there is a great deal of misinformation out there, generally put forth by people who have little, if any, real experience playing this exciting game. Tales of “so-called” injuries from playing paintball abound, yet if you wear the proper gear and follow the rules, the most you may have at the end of the day are some insignificant welts and perhaps a scrape or two from falling down or tripping while running through the bush or on the course. A very small price to pay for your participation in such as exciting, adrenaline pounding sport!

To this date, there are no verified deaths or life threatening injuries from paint balling or paintball being played in the correct manner. So what are you waiting for? If you are still unconvinced, read my article “Introduction to Paintball” for more information.

See you “on the field of battle”!

Gun safety and hunting first aid

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

There are a lot of reasons that a hunter would get seriously injured, but the major cause is improper gun handling. Too many hunters ignore gun safety precautions when hunting and don’t take good care of their weapon.

Hunting injuries and fatalities are becoming all too common in the sport of hunting and many people don’t seem concerned about the realities of these incidents. The logical hunter, however, takes careful note of all of the safety precautions involving his or her weapon and learns the basics of gun safety. It’s also why many states started gun training for kids.

One of the first fundamental laws of hunting safety is to always treat the gun as if it is loaded. This is a universal guideline for gun safety as it does not refer to any actual type of gun. In terms of having a gun in general, one should never assume that it is unloaded.

One should never be fooling around with a gun or wave it around, point it at others or work carelessly with it. There is always the possibility something could occur giving the odds of a dangerous incident more chance to happen than necessary. Instead, simply treat the gun as if it is always loaded.

Hunting can provide opportunities for many types of injuries. Being prepared is your best defense against disabling injuries or even life-threatening accidents. Knowing some basic hunting first aid and using common sense when in the wild can save both life and limb.

If you don’t know CPR, learn it. Call your local hospital, EMS, or fire department to find out when and where you can attend a community CPR class. You never know when you may need to perform CPR on a friend, family member, or even a stranger. A few hours of your time could save a life someday.

Many CPR classes offer basic first aid classes as well. Check with your local provider to see if this option is available before registering for a class.

The first rule of safety during a crisis may sound selfish but it is important. Take care of yourself first. Check the scene of an accident for unsafe conditions. Make the area safe for yourself and bystanders before beginning first aid. The reasoning behind this rule is that if you become injured or incapacitated, you can’t help anyone else. If you become injured, rescue workers arriving on the scene will then have you as an added victim to care for. Seconds make a difference in a crisis, but take a few beforehand to ensure that you will be able to provide the help that is needed.

How Important is Strength Training in Basketball?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

A new article has been posted to my site about strength training in basketball. If you are serious about you game you should check out my site.

The idea behind building your core is that, if you’re stronger than the other guy through your middle, you’ll be harder to move around the court. Guys like Willis Reed and Wes Unseld were great rebounders and scorers because they were stronger than almost anyone they came into contact with, so they could shoulder their defenders out of the way and either get to the hoop, or get to the ball if in pursuit of a rebound.

Buffalo hunting in Southern Africa

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Buffalo normaly gathers in herds where grazing and water is plentiful on the open savanna. They tend to seek shade in the hot part of the day and would rather graze at night and in the cooler part of the day. They can look like a boulder at first glance because their color is greyish-black. Buffalo are therefore exceptionally well camouflaged in dense cover, even though they are very large. Both males and females have horns, with the males developing the much desired gnarled bosses as they get older. The eyesight and hearing of buffalos are poor but their sense of smell is excellent. Because of this, it is much harder to get close to a herd of buffalo than a single bull. Buffalo hunting are so exciting because it is mainley done on foot. To look for, picking up and following fresh spoor from waterholes gives you a thrill like no other. You will find older bulls seperated from herds in small bachelor groups or solitary. The addrenaline rush of hunting this mountain of muscle and attitude is unrivaled and addictive. some countries have buffalo listed as protected game although they are not considered and endangered species, so you have to get special permits to be able to hunt them. Buffalo hunting and the buffalo’s dangerous nature when wounded has been documented by all the great hunters and on various video footage. Each situation is unique and buffalo are one of the most dangerous animals when wounded. Despite their size they are extremely quick and cunning at camouflage, as they remain absolutely still until one is right upon them. Contact World to Africa Hunting for more information of buffalo hunting.

Muscle Building Exercises

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

When it comes to building muscle, there is a very simple three-part process that you must always follow. There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule, so pay close attention!

#1 – In order to build muscle you must first stimulate muscle growth through some type of heavy weight-training exercise.

While it’s true that everyone’s body responds differently to different types of training, it is universally accepted that heavy weight training inflicts the type of muscle damage that is required to stimulate both bone density and muscle growth. The key to making this work for muscle growth is to target the best muscle building exercises and perform them on a regular basis. As a general rule of thumb, the more basic compound free weight exercises like squats, dead lifts, bench press and bent rows seem to stimulate muscle growth more effectively than the isolation style exercises like preacher curls, leg extensions, and smith machine bench press.

In my experiences lifting fairly heavy weights for lower repetitions is a surefire way to gain muscle fast. Yes it’s uncomfortable. Yes it hurts. Yes it makes you sore for a few days after your workout. But let’s face it, if you never go outside of your comfort zone and lift progressively heavier weights, you’ll never stimulate serious muscle growth!
